I'll go first. I want to get like a trivia thing going. It works by you answering a question correctly. Then you ask your own. Make then challenging if you can. If you answer and get it wrong. You can't post another till you get it write.

Q. True or False, An officer on the Titanic shot himself before she sank?

False, it is unconfirmed whether he shot himself, although I highly doubt he did.

After Captain Smith, who was the highest paid crewmember?

Incorrect. It was found by two survivors that an officer, shot two men and then stopped and said "I'm sorry men, it's every man for himself now." Gave a solute, then shot himself in the head. It is believed it's Chief Officer Wilde. Those who were close to Murdoch said he would not have had suicidal thoughts. We narrow it to these two men because Officer Moody, Purser Elory(sp) would not have given the order "Every man for himself." The two men who gave these accounts did not know each other, and both gave the same description.

And the highest paid crewmen under Captain Smith would have been Chief Officer Henry Wilde, he made 1,500 pounds a year compared to Smith's 6,200 pounds.

Kurt ask a question if you'd like.

Q. How much was Lady Duff Gordon's neckless that went down with the ship? (American money)

Can you give me the names of the two who reported this and where the information came from? I have heard this but have never heard the specifics.

I read it in the book "A Night to Remember" written by Walter Lord. If I could find a site for it I will post it. I do know it was two men whom said this. I believe it true, because how would two strangers report the same thing? They were taken from letters written to family as I recall. Neither Wilde nor Murdoch were found, so it would be impossible to prove 100% correct. But ill find it, or just loan the book again.

Actually the highest paid crewman after Capt. Smith was Chief Engineering officer Willliam Bell.

I've heard about the two men who claim that, but I think of it unconfirmed as there really is no concrete evidence except for heresay on that subject.

OK, thanks, I will look at my copy tonight, which I have not looked at for quite some time. Interesting. I remember hearing of a letter telling of Officers shooting people as well (someone from Norway or Finland???).

The problem I have with Officers shooting themselves and shooting others is that the night was dark and it has been observed that passengers seemed to get things confused. Some maybe could have seen officer Lowe fire his gun down the side of the ship and take it as he was aiming at a passenger.

I don't know. Two credible witnesses may be all that it takes to give evidence that someone (Wilde, Murdoch, or Smith shooting themselves). But then again, more than two credible witnesses said that the ship sank absolutley intacked...and you know!

OK my turn for a trivia question for the person who started this thread.

What were the "turning engines" for, and where were they located?
