-Can you exchange one life for another? A caterpilar can change into a butterfly. If a mindless insect could do it, why can't I? Was it any more unimaginable than the sinking of Titanic?-

In a deleted scene, old Rose says this sentence.
I'm from Germany. I understand every word, but not really its sense.
Does she mean that Jack died for her or that she couldn't have changed her life without jack's help or what??

I'd be thankful for answers.

Hey, I am from Germany, too!
We could speak German now, but that would be unfair ... the others wouldn't understand a word.

Well, I know what the sentence is in German, but I can't really figure out what she meant... maybe she wanted to say that she'd have rather died with Jack ... or that she wanted to break free but she couldn't before Jack met her and helped her to do so... or whatever...

Where in Germany do you live?

hi!
thanks for your answer. yes, let's continue to speak english in this forum;)
I'm from Munich, and you?
I thought the same, but I wasn't sure.... without him she would've died with titanic or killed herself or maybe even she'd have married cal. But he died for her so that she could have a fullfilled life. But a life without him and that's not the same for her.
Maybe that is the meaning of this sentence but maybe not?! ;)

I do not think she was implying that Jacks life was traded for hers exactly.

I think what she might be saying is that the Titanic disaster and her life up to that point was an ugly experience.

However, just like an ugly caterpiller which changes into a beautiful butterfly, the disaster transformed her (along with the sad expierence of knowing and loosing Jack), into a new person with a better and more beautiful life.

Yeah maybe that's it.
It would make sense. A caterpillar can change so easily into a butterfly but in her life something unimaginable like the sinking of the titanic had to happen. and (for her) even worse: she lost jack.
So it was very hard for her but for a caterpillar it's so easy.

well i guess you could use a catterpiller as a metaphore, but if you think about it when a catterpiller changes to a butterfly all it really does is change how it looks on the outside. i meen sure you can exchange your life outwordly, i guess, but i for one don't really think that jack died in place of rose... if thats what your trying to say... please tell me if i'm making sence...

hi!
no i don't understand exactly... you're right, when a caterpillar changes into a butterfly, it only changes its "outfit", but inside it's the same. exact...
You don't think that Jack died for Rose, do you?

What do you think this sentense wants to say?

all right.... in my opinion jack died for her. but he helped her a lot, he showed her the beautiful sights of life and so she decided to leave her old life.
but what does she mean with this sentence? i don't understand its sense.
