According to my internet research, the largest merchant vessel on the Great Lakes is the 1,013 foot long, 105 foot wide, S. S. Paul R. Tregurtha. Prior to 1990, this ship was named S. S. William J. De Lancy.

The DeLancey wasn't yet around at the time of Fitzgerald's sinking, though. The S/S prefix doesn't really apply, either, 'cause the ship's driven by diesels. I'm sorry...I'm gettin' picky.

DeLancey/Tregurtha, like many Great Lakes freighters, does have a limited number of passenger cabins. Tregurtha is said to be quice nice, and the food is reportedly superb.

Gosh LeoPlumtree, I have to be more carefull with my postings when you are around .

But technically, if you examine edward9139's posting asking who was the largest, he did not specify during the time the Edmund Fitzgerald was cruising. I answered the question assuming he wanted to know for all time. I know the Paul R. Tregurtha's keel did not get laid until 4 years after the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. So I guess I win on a technicality ..... at least this time.

But you did get me on the S.S. (steamship) designator error.
