Never really gave that much thought. But I guess you could make the arguement that each boat needed experienced employers to man the boats. I know there was a specific number that Lightoller wanted for each boat (seaman) but I cannot remember the number.
Maybe Murdoch's side had more men get in as crew? Maybe he decided on a bigger number of seamen for his boats? And, maybe since he was not as discriminating as Lightoller about letting men get into his boats? A steward (I think it was Fredrick Dent Ray) said in an interview that he decided to get into a boat because he felt that since he was a crewmember, it was his job to help row. So, maybe that is something to think about. |
