Well I think cal thought of rose as a throphy
Like something of his property which gives him the ''right'' to command her So clearing that point plus rose's dreams and frustration is obvious to think they wouldn't be able to stay a happy couple adding another thing she was with him against her wishes, it was basically her mom's idea..
