  The steel was not of the same quality as today's steel. And, the steel quality in combination with the extremely cold water may have caused the steel to become brittle. However, you "rub" up against an iceburg that is 5 stories tall, and 50 stories below the surface, you are going to get holes, lots of them. And, afterall, a ship is just a hunk of metal and wood. It will sink. |
