They are not the correct numbers!
To begin with four 1st Class ladies died: Bess Allison, Edith Evans, Ann Isham and Ida Straus. No way did "81" 2nd Class women die. Also no way did "56" 2nd Class men and "111" 3rd Class children survive. - I doubt that there were that number of children in total on board. - 12 and above counted as adults. - See the Statistics paper by Lester Mitcham on www.encyclopedia-titanica.org. 1st Class - 324, not your 319 Died - 123 Men: 118 Women: 4 Children: 1 Survived - 201 Men: 58 Women: 139 Children: 4 2nd Class - 284, not your 386 Died - 166 Men: 154 [includes the bandsmen] Women: 12 Children: 0 Survived - 118 Men: 13 Women: 83 Children: 22 3rd Class - 709, not your 797 Died - 528 Men: 390 Women: 89 Children: 49 Survived - 181 Men: 60 Women: 91 Children: 30 Crew Died - 679 [includes the Postal Workers, but not the bandsmen] Men: 676 Women: 3 Survived - 212 Men: 192 Women: 20 In Total: 389 women & children and 323 men = 712 survived, while 158 women & children and 1,338 men = 1,496 died. |

This is something I have seen debated in several forums.
I generally go with 1,523 dead 705 survived Of course this event took place back in 1912, but it always seems so strange to me that there is a discrepancy in the numbers - I would have thought there would have been better record keeping. |

Yes, it always seems that the numbers are just slightly off from each other.

The problem is that while the names are known hardly anyone bothers to count them. - Count the names using both the information available in 1912 and that currently available and it proves 712 survivors and 1,496 lost.
Some of the discrepancies come from early counts [before White Star updated some of its informations] and by continued reliance on those counts; or are created by improper calculations on the part of those who are just guessing or making alterations to figures that they have no understanding of. silverFire, Am I right in believing that 705 and 1,523 come from a book by Eaton & Haas? |

Salaam, Lester.
>The problem is that while the names are known hardly anyone >bothers to count them. Also, most Titanic buffs mistakenly believe that reading a book about the Titanic constitutes "original research." (Actually, it just means that most Titanic buffs are uncritically parroting the views of various Titanic authors -- even if those views are based on erroneous information.) Achmet |
